Job Description

At The Northern Virginia Volleyball Association (NVVA), we believe coaches are integral to preparing our athletes for the world. We’re looking for passionate volleyball coaches to plan, organize, and implement an approved training curriculum in a learning environment that encourages athletes to develop and fulfill their athletic potential. Our ideal candidate will tailor practice plans to help all athletes develop technically, physically and socially. S/He should be passionate about the programs they coach, their athletes, and their job, with a desire to make real connections based on mutual respect and trust. Above all, the goal is to cultivate a learning experience that is organized, meaningful, and enjoyable.


Objectives of this Role

  • Foster interdisciplinary learning, coaching, and instruction according to NVVA’s curriculum standards, and the athletic needs and abilities of individuals and groups of athletes
  • Create a team culture that is welcoming, positive, and devotes the majority of time to instruction rather than discipline
  • Plan, prepare, and coach programs, promoting the general progress and well-being of individual athletes and groups of athletes
  • Drive outstanding athletic achievement for all athletes in your program and support colleagues in driving athlete achievement organization-wide
  • Communicate, cooperate, and consult with NVVA staff, and parents/guardians in the athletes’ best interest
  • Build knowledge by attending continuing coaching seminars


Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

  • Utilize a wide variety of coaching methods to create differentiated opportunities for deep understanding for all learners, including athletes with special needs
  • Create and distribute volleyball supports, including reading material, activities, homework assignments, sharing lessons in a comprehensive manner, using visual/audio accompaniments to facilitate interactive learning
  • Assess and evaluate athlete growth; creating action plans on a program-wide, team-wide, and individual basis in response to athlete data
  • Assess, record, and report on development, progress, and behavior of athletes, issuing skill and behavior progress reports
  • Plan, execute, and chaperone training and competition at our facility, and outdoor activities and tournaments
  • Collaborate with the technical director, technical coordinator, and athlete success manager in providing athletes with athletic and social support, and attend family/support meetings as needed


Skills and Qualifications

  • 4 years of college or professional volleyball playing experience OR
  • 2+ years of college or professional coaching experience or 4+ years of high-level club volleyball or high school coaching experience
  • Experience working with both female and male youth athletes (age range of 7-18)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, recreational management, sports management, or similar
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and make quick decisions
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with a focus on knowledge sharing and collaboration.
  • Effective customer service, organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Gold Medal Squared coaching experience or similar 
  • A strong love for volleyball and teaching the game 


Physical Requirements: 

  • Candidates applying for this position should be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted repeatedly throughout the workday
  • The physical requirements of this job require frequent walking around and demonstrating and assisting with exercise movements; bending, stretching, lifting, pushing, pulling and squatting are movements performed daily

Additional Salary Information: Salary: $35,000 to $45,000 per year depending on experience. Benefits: Health stipend, paid time-off, sick leave, moving cost stipend, continuing education courses provided such as AVCA convention, GMS, Art of Coaching, etc.
